Algar Seco is a group of fascinating rock formations in the town of Carvoeiro. Erosion has created rock pools, caves, and windows and balconies over the sea. It resembles a lunar landscape, and is one of the main natural monuments of Algarve. The limestone cliffs are filled with fossils of marine life from as far back as 24 million years ago, but the main attraction is the beautiful scenery.
There are sweeping views from every angle, but especially from a cave called “A Boneca” (“The Doll”). It’s said to have been given that name because it’s inside a pinnacle that once resembled a doll. Two eroded holes inside are windows opening to a view of the ocean and are the perfect spots for photos. Only a few people fit inside at a time, so you shouldn’t linger. No one can resist spending some time here, trying to capture the perfect photo, but you should remember that others want to have the same experience. There are days when people line up outside, waiting for their turn to go inside and take their photos.
You should wear sneakers, as with flip flops you’ll very likely slip on the rocks. You should always walk carefully, since there are no railings or safety barriers. The paths are hewn into the rocks and cliffs. This is not a place for those with mobility issues or small children.
Some people bring their bathing suit, either to swim in the rock pools or to jump into the ocean from the cliffs. This is a popular spot for cliff jumping, so you’ll see many young daredevils. The rock pools are formed at high tide. There’s very little water when the tide is low, but you might see small fish brought by the waves.
After your visit, relax with a drink or meal at one of the outdoor tables of the bar-restaurant, which is found by the Boneca cave.
There are displays explaining the wildlife and vegetation, spread around the site and on the boardwalk that meanders along the cliff towards the center of Carvoeiro. This boardwalk stretches for 570 meters (1870 feet) and has benches for you to rest and admire the view.
How to Get to Algar Seco
Follow the road up the cliff on the left side (when facing the sea) of Praia do Carvoeiro, and then the coastal boardwalk. It's about a 10-minute walk. To get to Carvoeiro, you can take Vamus bus 107 from Portimão. However, this bus is very infrequent -- there are just half a dozen departures on weekdays and four on weekends! By car, it takes 20 minutes from Portimão and Armação de Pêra, and 30 minutes from Albufeira.
Beaches by Algar Seco
In addition to Praia do Carvoeiro, you have Praia de Vale de Centeanes within walking distance (it takes about 20 to 25 minutes, but you just have to go up the main road). By car, you’re there in about 5 minutes.
