This large beach is over one kilometer (over half a mile) long and about 75 meters (250 feet) wide (this, of course, depends on the tides). At low tide, it continues north for two more kilometers (over a mile).
It’s located between two of Algarve’s most popular surfing beaches, so it has traditionally mainly attracted surfers. In recent years, however, it has also become a favorite of families from around Portugal. Very few foreign tourists come here.
Everyone tends to concentrate in the middle section, by the entrance, but if you continue walking south (to the left) you’ll find more peace and quiet. If the tide allows it, walk north (to the right), where rocks offer privacy and naturism is tolerated. This northern side is actually considered a different beach, called Praia do Penedo, but is only accessible from Vale Figueiras, at low tide.
Like most others in the region, it’s surrounded by tall cliffs, and its landscape is protected as part of the Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park. There are no facilities, but there’s lifeguard supervision in the summer. Always bring water and snacks. If you prefer shade, don’t forget an umbrella. Keep some distance from the cliffs, due to the risk of rockfall.
There are rocks in the water, strong currents and often big waves, so it’s a better beach for surfing than for swimming. Because of its size and landscape, it’s great for walks by the sea. If you really like to walk, follow a trail over the cliffs for a panoramic view of the beach and the coast.
The surfing conditions are generally good for all levels. Surf schools bring beginners but it’s also a choice for experienced surfers.

How to Get to Praia de Vale Figueiras
You can only reach this beach by car. It’s 20 minutes from Aljezur and Carrapateira, and the last 2.5 kilometers are through a dirt road. Although this road can be a little bumpy, it’s suitable for regular cars. There are a few parking spots on the side of the road just behind the beach. Due to the small number of visitors, it’s usually easy to park.
Beaches by Praia de Vale Figueiras
To the south (about 20 minutes by car) is Praia da Bordeira, while to the north (a 30-minute ride away) is Praia da Arrifana. Both of these beaches are mostly known as surfing destinations.
