Burgau is a small village located 23 kilometers (14 miles) east of Sagres and its beach is one of the most popular for families in western Algarve. Unlike other coastal villages, like Albufeira, it never grew into a major city or resort, and remains a picturesque little place of whitewashed houses and narrow streets. Some people see a resemblance to a Greek island, but it’s very much a typical Portuguese village. Although it’s no longer a fishing village (it now lives from tourism), there are still small fishing boats by the beach.
The village is the eastern end of Algarve’s wilder west coast (Costa Vicentina) and a good base to explore the region. The beach is narrow and often nearly disappears in the winter, and can become crowded in the summer. It’s about 350 meters (1150 feet) long, and backed by a cliff on the western end and by the village on the eastern. The village’s houses cascade down a hill, which protects the beach from the northern winds. If you continue walking up the hill to the east, you’ll have a panoramic view over the beach.
The water is usually calm and clear, and at low tide it’s great for swimming and safe for children. That’s when you see people renting kayaks and pedal boats, and tidal pools are formed on the eastern end (left side when facing the sea). Starfish, crabs and other sea creatures are often trapped in these pools, until high tide drags them back into the ocean. On the days with waves, you’ll find bodyboarders. Also don’t be surprised if you see people rubbing clay on their body and face, as some believe that the kind found here has healing properties.
In the bathing season (June to September), there are lifeguards on duty, as well as parasols and loungers for rent. It also flies the Blue Flag, indicating cleanliness and safety.
There’s a very popular restaurant right on the beach. People go for the fresh fish and seafood, as well as for the beautiful view. If you can’t get a table, you’ll find plenty of other places to eat a short walk away, in the center of the village.
About 3.5 kilometers (2 miles) to the west are the ruins of an old fort. Built in 1632, the Fort of Almádena was nearly destroyed by an earthquake in 1755 and completely abandoned in 1849.

How to Get to Praia do Burgau
Burgau is about 20 minutes by car from Sagres, less than 15 from Salema, and 20 from Lagos. From Sagres and Salema, you can also take the infrequent Vamus bus 47, while from Lagos you can take bus number 4 of the local “A Onda” network, which departs about 10 times a day. Finding a parking spot close to the beach or anywhere in the village isn’t easy. However, the village is so small, that wherever you park, the beach is always a short walk away. If you don’t mind walking up and down a steep hill, park at the top of the hill on the eastern side of the village (just go up Rua da Fortaleza).
Beaches by Praia do Burgau
About 5 minutes by car to the west is Praia de Cabanas Velhas, which is mostly frequented by local families but is also known to be naturist-friendly. To the east (less than 15 minutes away) is Praia da Luz, one of the most family-friendly beaches in Algarve. Hikers sometimes follow the paths over the cliffs to Praia da Luz, enjoying beautiful views along the way.
