This is the main beach of the village of Ferragudo and is mostly frequented by locals. The few tourists that come here are guests of the hotels nearby, but it’s very much worth visiting. A 17th-century fort stands on the northern end, facing the Portimão skyline. Because of its picturesque location, the fort is one of Algarve’s most photographed monuments. It’s also known as the Castle of São João do Arade and was built to defend the port of Portimão. Today it’s private property and it’s not possible to visit the interior.
This is where the Arade River meets the Atlantic, so the water is usually calm, but there are still lifeguards on duty in the summer. Although it’s a mix of river and ocean, the water is clean and good for swimming, as certified by the Blue Flag. For this reason, it’s a very family-friendly beach. There’s even a playground by the entrance.
The water reaches the fort when the tide rises, but at low tide you can walk around the monument and reach the neighboring beach of Angrinha.
Because it’s a relatively long beach, it offers plenty of space. The middle section is covered with wicker parasols and loungers for rent in the summer, but on the southern and northern ends you can spread your towel away from the crowds.
You’ll see many boats on the water. They come here from the Portimão marina across the river. End your visit with a meal or drinks at one of the bars and restaurants behind the beach. Some remain open outside the bathing season.

How to Get to Praia Grande do Ferragudo
Water taxis bring you to this beach from the marina by Praia da Rocha in Portimão. If you’re staying at one of the many hotels there, you might want to make the trip. However, most people come by car. There’s parking on the side of the road above the beach. Vamus bus 110 goes between Portimão and Lagoa, and stops nearby. However, it’s very infrequent, with just eight departures on weekdays and four on weekends, so Uber or renting a car are the better options.

In addition to the neighboring Praia da Angrinha, you have Praia dos Caneiros just 5 minutes away by car. In 15 minutes you can also reach Praia do Carvoeiro.
